Giving Technology a Second Life

Second Step Tech refurbishes donated technology and puts it in the hands of those who need it most. Join us in bridging the digital divide one device at a time.

Our Mission

At Second Step Tech, we believe in the power of technology to transform lives. Our mission is to collect, refurbish, and redistribute technology to underserved communities, organizations, and individuals who lack access to digital resources.

In today's increasingly digital world, access to technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity. From employment opportunities and healthcare access to everyday connectivity, technology plays a crucial role in daily life. Yet millions remain disconnected due to economic barriers.

We're committed to addressing this inequality through sustainable, community-focused solutions. By giving technology a second life, we're not only helping people connect to essential resources but also reducing e-waste and promoting environmental sustainability.

Our Impact

Since our founding, we've refurbished countless devices and helped numerous individuals gain access to technology they otherwise couldn't afford. Each device we save represents another opportunity for someone to learn, connect, and grow.

Our work has enabled individuals to improve their livelihoods, connect with essential services, and build better futures. By providing technology access, we're opening doors to new opportunities and fostering community growth.

About Second Step Tech

Second Step Tech was founded with a simple idea: give used technology a second step in its lifecycle while helping bridge the digital divide. We collect donated devices, refurbish them, and distribute them to those in need.

Founded in 2024 by a group of passionate high school students, Second Step Tech began as a small initiative to help local community members access laptops for remote work and digital connectivity during the pandemic. What started as a neighborhood project quickly grew into a community-wide movement as we witnessed the overwhelming need for technology access across all demographics.

Today, we've expanded our reach to serve organizations, community centers, senior facilities, and individual families throughout the region. Our team of dedicated volunteers works tirelessly to collect, refurbish, and redistribute technology to those who need it most, while also providing technical support and digital literacy resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you ensure my data is removed from donated devices?

We take data security very seriously. All donated devices undergo a thorough data sanitization process using industry-standard software that meets Department of Defense requirements for data destruction. For devices with hard drives, we use multi-pass wiping techniques to ensure all personal information is completely removed. For devices that cannot be securely wiped, we physically remove and destroy the storage components before recycling the remaining hardware.

Are donations tax-deductible?

Yes, all donations to Second Step Tech are tax-deductible. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and we provide receipts for all contributions, including both device donations and monetary support. The receipt will include our tax ID number and a description of your donation for your records.

What happens to devices that can't be refurbished?

Devices that cannot be refurbished are responsibly recycled through our certified e-waste recycling partners. We ensure that no donated technology ends up in landfills and that all components are processed according to environmental best practices. In some cases, we may salvage working parts from non-functional devices to use in repairs of other equipment.

How do you decide who receives the refurbished devices?

We work with community organizations and social service agencies to identify individuals and groups with the greatest need for technology access. Recipients are selected based on factors including financial need, potential impact, and overall benefit to the community. We also maintain an application process for those who request assistance directly.

What kind of training do you provide with the devices?

Each recipient receives basic training on device setup, operation, and maintenance. Depending on their needs and experience, we may also provide instruction on internet basics, online safety, productivity software, and other essential digital skills. Our goal is to empower everyone to use their device confidently.

Can businesses donate in bulk?

Absolutely! We welcome corporate donations and can facilitate bulk pickups for organizations upgrading their technology. Corporate donations make a significant impact on our ability to serve the community, and we work with your IT department to ensure a smooth process. We also offer special recognition for our corporate partners and provide detailed documentation for sustainability reporting.
