Giving Technology a Second Life
Second Step Tech refurbishes donated tech and gives it to people who need it. Help us bridge the digital divide, one device at a time.
Our Mission
At Second Step Tech, we get technology to people who need it. We collect used devices, fix them up, and give them to communities and individuals without access to digital tools.
Technology is essential today for jobs, healthcare, and staying connected. Many people can't afford it, creating a digital gap.
We're closing that gap by giving tech a second chance. This helps people connect and also reduces e-waste, protecting our environment.
Our Impact
Since our founding, we've refurbished countless devices and helped numerous individuals gain access to technology they otherwise couldn't afford. Each device we save represents another opportunity for someone to learn, connect, and grow.
Our work has enabled individuals to improve their livelihoods, connect with essential services, and build better futures. By providing technology access, we're opening doors to new opportunities and fostering community growth.

About Second Step Tech
Second Step Tech was founded with a simple idea: give used technology a second step in its lifecycle while helping bridge the digital divide. We collect donated devices, refurbish them, and distribute them to those in need.
Founded in 2024 by a group of passionate high school students, Second Step Tech began as a small initiative to help local community members access laptops for remote work and digital connectivity during the pandemic. What started as a neighborhood project quickly grew into a community-wide movement as we witnessed the overwhelming need for technology access across all demographics.
Today, we've expanded our reach to serve organizations, community centers, senior facilities, and individual families throughout the region. Our team of dedicated volunteers works tirelessly to collect, refurbish, and redistribute technology to those who need it most, while also providing technical support and digital literacy resources.
What We Do
- Device Collection: We gather donated computers, laptops, phones, and tablets from individuals, organizations, and businesses. Our collection drives make it easy for donors to responsibly dispose of unwanted technology while making a positive impact.
- Refurbishment & Repair: Our skilled volunteers and technicians wipe data, repair hardware issues, and install or update operating systems to ensure each device is ready for new use. We specialize in extending the useful life of technology that would otherwise end up in landfills.
- Testing & Quality Assurance: Every device goes through a thorough inspection and testing process to confirm functionality and reliability. We ensure each recipient receives technology that meets their needs and works properly.
- Distribution: We partner with community organizations and nonprofits to place these refurbished devices in the hands of those who will benefit the most. Our targeted distribution ensures technology reaches those with limited access and greatest need.

Donate Technology
Your unused devices can make a significant difference in someone's life. We accept donations of laptops, desktops, tablets, smartphones, and related accessories. All donated items are either refurbished for distribution or, if beyond repair, responsibly recycled.
By donating your technology, you're not only helping bridge the digital divide—you're also making an environmentally responsible choice by keeping electronic waste out of landfills. Each device donated represents another opportunity for connection, growth, and progress.

We take data security very seriously. All donated devices undergo a thorough data sanitization process using industry-standard software that meets Department of Defense requirements for data destruction. For devices with hard drives, we use multi-pass wiping techniques to ensure all personal information is completely removed. For devices that cannot be securely wiped, we physically remove and destroy the storage components before recycling the remaining hardware.
Yes, all donations to Second Step Tech are tax-deductible. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and we provide receipts for all contributions, including both device donations and monetary support. The receipt will include our tax ID number and a description of your donation for your records.
Devices that cannot be refurbished are responsibly recycled through our certified e-waste recycling partners. We ensure that no donated technology ends up in landfills and that all components are processed according to environmental best practices. In some cases, we may salvage working parts from non-functional devices to use in repairs of other equipment.
We work with community organizations and social service agencies to identify individuals and groups with the greatest need for technology access. Recipients are selected based on factors including financial need, potential impact, and overall benefit to the community. We also maintain an application process for those who request assistance directly.
We aim to provide basic guidance to help recipients get started with their device. This can include setup help and resources for online safety and essential software use.
Absolutely! We welcome corporate donations and can facilitate bulk pickups for organizations upgrading their technology. Corporate donations make a significant impact on our ability to serve the community, and we work with your IT department to ensure a smooth process. We also offer special recognition for our corporate partners and provide detailed documentation for sustainability reporting.
